Daily and seasonal variations of the partial pressure of CO in 2 surface seawater along Belgian and southern Dutch coastal areas

چکیده
Ž . The variations of the partial pressure of CO pCO and related parameters were determined in surface seawater along 2 2 the Belgian coast, from January 1995 to June 1996, at both daily and seasonal time scales. The distribution of pCO in this 2 area is regulated by river input from the Scheldt, biological activity and hydrodynamics. The contribution of each of these Ž . processes varies as a function of the considered time scale: i the daily variation of pCO depends on the tide although 2 Ž . modulated by the biological diel cycle; ii the seasonal variation of pCO depends on the input from the Scheldt and the 2 seasonal variations of phytoplanktonic biomass. During winter, the plume of the river Scheldt is oversaturated in pCO with 2 respect to the atmosphere. During spring and summer, phytoplankton blooms occur both in the lower Scheldt estuary and in the river plume and may lead to undersaturation of pCO in the easternmost area of the river plume. However, the 2 degradation of phytoplankton induces oversaturation of pCO , in the westernmost area of the plume. Furthermore, the 2 inter-annual variation of pCO depends partly on the fluctuations of the discharge of the Scheldt. Our preliminary results 2 strongly suggest that, on an annual basis, the Scheldt plume behaves as a net source of CO to the atmosphere. q 1999 2 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Seasonal Variations of Seawater Properties in the Southwestern Coastal Waters of the Caspian Sea
Seasonal variations of the seawater properties (e.g. temperature, salinity, density and chlorophyll-a) in western part of the southern coastal waters of the Caspian Sea near the Iranian coast were studied. A portable CTD probe was applied for profiling from sea surface to bottom at 23 stations. Maximum depth of the profiling stations was more than 470 m in the study area. Vertical structure of ...
متن کاملAssessing Chlorophyll-a in the Southwestern Coastal Waters of the Caspian Sea
Caspian Sea with an average depth of 27m is the largest enclosed water body in the world. Despite its enormity and valuable biotic and economic resources, investigations on the biota and seawater properties are mosaic at best. In previous studies, the monitoring of the chlorophyll-a concentrations in the Southern Caspian Sea was organized based on satellite data sets however, vertical dis...
متن کاملReport of a Physical Oceanography Research Project over the Southern Continental Shelf of the Caspian Sea
Abstract The study presents monthly variations of seawater properties, monitoring water column stability and stratification over the southern shelf of the Caspian Sea which depends on collecting data. Field measurements were carried out during 13 cruises along the southern boundary of the sea. Spatial and temporal distributions of temperature, salinity and density were investigated. Monthl...
متن کاملTemperature, Salinity and Density Measurements in the Coastal Waters of the Rudsar, South Caspian Sea
CTD (conductivity, temperature and depth) data collected in the coastal waters of Rudsar in summer 2008 were analyzed to identify the isothermal layers, thermocline depth and vertical structure of seawater properties. During the survey, probe was released into the seawater column down to 117 m depth. Results showed a vertical variation of temperature between 29°C at the sea surface and less tha...

The concentration of selected trace metals (Fe, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in 30surface sediments were measured using Atomic Absorption Spectrometer to investigatethe spatial and seasonal variations of trace metals along Kanyakumari coast, India. Toassess the environmental risk of trace metals, enrichment factor, geo-accumulation index, pollution load index, and ecological risk index have been calculat...
